===========================
January is a lousy month for gigs. The promoters are counting the cash from Christmas; the punters are all in HMV trying to get rid of their vouchers and the bands are all playing other places where it rains less.
So - this will be short.
Highlight of the month is I Am Kloot. They play Whelans on January 17th for a ridiculously reasonable EUR14. The band has been around Ireland a lot this last year, having supported David Kitt recently in Vicar St and entertaining Witnness last July. Alas, I won't be in Dublin for this gig, Peter. Here's a great live track recorded in the BBC recently: Link 1
A radical change of pace next - Timo Maas, who takes on the Red Box, Dublin on February 13th - I came across a track of his two months ago and it blew me away, check it out here: Link 2
This is topical, Enda and I were just talking about this today - apparently the LAPD are taking another look at the Elliott Smith death, it seems he had two stab wounds, not one, which makes the case for suicide less likely, they say. Closer to home, a tribute night to Smith is taking place on January 19th in the Village, Dublin. It features Turn, The Walls, members of Bell X1, members of Ten Speed Racer, Random, Adrian Crowley, Katell Keineg, and Bray Vista - that night has more than a passing Donal Scannell flavour.
Oh - and if your eyes skirted past the mention of Random in the middle of that last paragraph, let me state, Random's 4-track EP "Falling Through The Clouds" was officially my CD of choice for 2003 - and it's still available on their site (www.rndm.com) for a measly EUR5.99 (but I get a 10% cut for this plug, right Darragh?)
And that's it.
M.
