When I called it "an irregular music-related e-mail", I didn't mean the music would be irregular... just the timing of the mailshots!
I haven't sent an Issue001 since January, which made me think being in Barcelona most of my time was resulting in me losing touch with the Irish music scene... then I realised it was just that there was feck all decent stuff happening for the past few months. April bucks the trend though. (But it's the Lidell gig mentioned below for May that tops them all.) Read on.
In chronological order:
Los Angeles based string quartet 'The Section Quartet' play the Sugar Club on Saturday March 27th with a reinterpretation of Radiohead's OK Computer. The night before they do the same to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.
Colin, KJ and I caught John Spillane last year at the Purty Sessions, he was a real treat - except he didn't appreciate me taking photos of him when he was tuning up, and he told me so. Nonetheless, a fine traditional Irish performer, one man and his guitar, appearing with the ever-talented Ronan O'Snodaigh at The Village on Wednesday March 31st.
Those in the know will know, but I put it here merely as a reminder: Einsturzende Neubaten, TBMC, Sunday April 4th.
The following night holds a real treat, in the form of Grant Lee Philips, at the Village. The talent behind the defunct Grant Lee Buffalo, get a feel for his music by downloading this track Link 1
Calexico roll into town on April 15th. It's their first Irish showing, I believe, since the Witnness event last year. If you like your bands big, visually impressive and that little bit unusual (they fuse bluesy Mariachi, rock and jazz), please do go. Satisfaction guaranteed. Take a listen to a track here: Link 2
I hardly need to say much about the highly popular Ash, but they're playing in the TBMC, which is a tidy venue for a band of such stature, sure to be a rocking gig. April 22nd.
And perhaps the best two are left for last.
April 29th, Vicar Street, EUR25.50 gets you Mum, from Iceland. Or should that be Múm? Lewis, Ronan and I saw them in Stockholm two years ago - the drummer brought a metal bucket of water on stage to play with, that's the type of experimental musos I speak of here. Quieter than quiet. Sweeter than sweet.
Finally, Jamie Lidell. One part of duo super_collider, along with Cristian Vogel. Lidell is not easy viewing. He's not easy listening. You may gag initially. You may well require ear plugs. But his voice alone is to die for. I've bought his back catalogue and I remain highly dis-satisfied. Reason being, I've been unable to recapture the sheer wonder I experienced on May 24th last year when I saw him perform, right there in front of me, live. How to say this without sounding ridiculous: It was truly the weirdest musical/theatrical performance I have ever seen, and I hunger to experience it again. Sugar Club (THE SUGAR CLUB! For an event like this!!), Sunday May 2nd. Donal Dineen supports. If you go to nothing else all year, go to this.
