Welcome to the new-look Issue001, this wee beauty used to come out back in 2003 and 2004, and went to friends & family and not many more. Next thing Altavista (not Google, strangely) starting pointing scores of visitors my direction, and I found the mailing list numbers increasing exponentially. It freaked me out, too humble was I to continue (!), until I had a better plan, and an improved means to serve such numbers. So, now, nearing 750 subscribers, let me announce the relaunch of Issue001, and welcome you all back! Onwards-and-upwards!
Cold War Kids appeared on Letterman on December 21st. Is it time to disassociate ourselves with them? They looked ridiculous. I'm a great fan of the music of CWK, and I've had many hair-standing-back-neck moments with their "Robbers & Cowards" release, but this pushed it a little. I'm gonna catch them for the first time supporting Clap Your Hands in Tripod in Dublin soon; and again at SXSW in Texas in March.
"Hair Down" is recommended as an intro to the band's music, "Rubidoux" comes second in terms of finest tune on the disc.
That said, I'm agog re the Letterman thing, too much movement, too much prancing, I'd very much have liked to have had a staplegun to keep them in one spot so we could focus on the music and not their ass-shaking. Watch here.
Tapes 'n Tapes, one of THE best band names I've come across in the past 12 months. (Then again "The Dirty Three" is a great name, even if impronouncable for the Irish, but it was no saving grace for them.) I've just spent the day listening to the Minnesota band's second release "The Loon" start-to-finish and back again. First released in 2005, it took a 2006 release from XL Records for it to get the exposure so richly deserved. "The Illiad" is a tremendous tune, so sweet at the off, and forceful at the close; and "Omaha" is beautifully delicate. Recommended. Darragh and I are fighting-it-out around whether he heard them first, or if I fluked one - Darragh often first mentions the bands I end up liking greatly, like Tom Vek, Arctic Monkeys & Whitey. Fancy a writing slot, D?

GUEST SPOT: DANNY SEIM of MENOMENA Q: What’s your most-tipped band of the moment? A: We just finished a tour with a band from Portland and San Francisco (Jay, the drummer, travels up the Northwest whenever they play) called 31Knots. Towards the end of the outing, I was more excited to watch their set than play our own every nite. Their new album comes out on Mar 6, & I'm sure it'll be amazing." |

The original soundtrack composed by Cane141's Michael Smalle for the "Lost At Sea" art installation has received an invitation to accompany the installation to New York.
This is only the second time the Irish band play stateside, and offers many fans an opportunity to see the elusive group for the first time. Many ardent fans have never seen the band play live.
"Lost At Sea", a collaboration between Cane141 and artist Roisin Coyle will exhibit at the Gracespace Gallery in Brooklyn.
Cane141 will use the visit to play a number of shows with their current line-up of Michael, Sandra & Sinead.
